Carnival in Cyprus 2020

The annual Carnival is one of the biggest holidays in Cyprus. All Cypriot cities and villages organize festive events within the framework of the Carnival, but the biggest and brightest event in all of Cyprus is the Carnival in Limassol.

Carnival begins 10 days before the Great Lent or 50 days before Easter. The beginning of the holiday marks the entrance to the city of the King and Queen of Carnival. Within ten days, many events are organized by municipalities. In many clubs and hotels there are costumed parties, people in carnival costumes go to shops and even to work. Particular attention is paid to the decoration of cities. Places where celebrations are planned, as well as the central part of cities are decorated in the most intricate way.

The culmination of Carnival – The main parade in Limassol, which takes place on the last day of the holiday. Bright multicolored mobile platforms and many people in carnival costumes with songs and dances pass along the street of Archbishop Makarios.

Most events during the Carnival are free. Anyone can take part in them.

Carnival in Limassol 2020

From 16 to  26 of February

The Limassol carnival is a Cypriot folk festival that is celebrated in Limassol and throughout Cyprus over the past hundred years.

Carnival is held on the eve of spring, regardless of economic and political situations and gives people the opportunity to express confidence in the future and hope that the new year will be successful and happy.

Annually, the municipality of Limassol organizes numerous events in open areas and in crowded places. Entry and participation are free.

This year’s festivities of the Mediterranean Deep Blue carnival will begin with the solemn entrance of the Queen of Carnival on Thursday, February 16 and will end with the Grand Parade on Sunday, February 26.

Program of activities

Thursday February 16

11:00 – Carnival celebrations near the Cooperative Savings Bank buildings on Gladstonos Street and Bank of Cyprus on Ayiou Andreou Street;
12:30 – Musical performance by Limassol Serenaders in Saripolou Square;
17:30 – A funeral procession of the mayor and members of the city council, accompanied by the orchestra to Grigoris Afxentiou Square;
17:30 -Music event in Grigoris Afxentiou with the participation of Mario Papadopoulos, Lime & Sol and Batukinio;
19: 00- Grand entrance of the Queen of Carnival. The parade will start from the Grigori Afxentiou square (post office) through the streets of Anexartisias, Ayiou Andreou, Karaiskaki, Stasinou, Andrea Drousioti to Heroes Square.

Friday, February 17th

19: 30- Concert of children’s choral groups in Limassol.

Saturday February 18

10: 30- Traveling on a children’s train in Limassol, picking up at the Cooperative Savings Bank building on Gladstonos Street;
11:00 -14: 00 – Carnival treasure hunt, organized by the city municipality together with the radio station Choice FM.

Sunday the 19th of February

11: 30- Children’s parade-carnival in Limassol, the procession will begin from the quay opposite the Citizen Service Center to the southern entrance to the municipal park;
18:00 -Music evening dedicated to the creativity of George Giorgalletos (opposite the music hall Perama Music Stage).

Monday February 20

19:30 – Carnival songs and serenades in the Ayia Fyla area.

Tuesday February 21st

19:30 – Carnival songs and serenades in the area of ​​Zakaki;
19:30 – Carnival songs and serenades in the districts of Ayios Andreas and Ayios Ioannis;
19: 30- Carnival songs and serenades in the Ayios Nikolaos area;
20: 00- Parade of “crazy” costumes in Limassol from Heroes Square to the medieval castle;
20:30 – A party at the medieval castle.

Wednesday February 22

19:30 -Concert of the male choir in Trakasol;
20:30 – Big Street Party on the University Square (CUT), organized by the municipality of Limassol in conjunction with the radio stations Klik FM and Choice FM.

Thursday 23rd February

19:30 – Evening carnival parade from the Grigori Afxentiou square to the square near the medieval castle;
20:30 – Carnival fiesta near a medieval castle with music, dances and a contest for the best costumes.

Friday, February 24th

19:00 – An evening of carnival songs and serenades in Limassol.

Saturday February 25

10: 30- Traveling on a children’s train in Limassol, picking up at the Cooperative Savings Bank building on Gladstonos Street;
15:00 -Automobile race of Limassol club of classic cars from Enaerios parking to Grigori Afxentiou;
18:30 -Parad of performers of serenades and carnival songs from the building of the City Hall to Grigori Afxentiou Square.

Sunday the 26th of February

13:00 – Limassol Grand Parade;
21: 00- Farewell to the carnival fiesta on the square of the old port.
